The president of the French far-right National Rally party, Jordan Bardella, said today that he had taken note of the Hungarian opposition's victory in the parliamentary elections and added that outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban is a great patriot.
Although the National Rally is a long-time ally of Fidesz, the party of the outgoing Hungarian prime minister, Bardella stressed that the success of opposition leader Peter Magyar was received with respect by Orban, which shows that the constant accusations that European institutions have made against Hungarian democracy in recent years were unfounded.
In a message on social media, Bardella praised Orban, calling him a "great patriot", a sentiment shared by the leader of the far-right in France, Marine Le Pen.
According to him, Orban promoted "family policies that helped protect the birth rate and defended the borders of his country and Europe from migration flows."
As French media have recalled, since Orban came to power in 2010, the birth rate in Hungary has been steadily declining, and it is estimated that last year the population fell below 9,5 million.
