The European Parliament today adopted a resolution calling for action against Hungary amid deep concern over the country's deteriorating human rights, democracy and rule of law situation. 393 deputies voted for the resolution, which calls on Hungary to withdraw new restrictive laws on asylum seekers and non-governmental organizations, 221 were against, and 64 deputies abstained. The resolution calls on Hungary to reach an agreement with the US authorities so that the Budapest Central European University of the American billionaire George Soros can freely continue its work. The position of Hungarian officials is that this University, because it issues both Hungarian and American diplomas, has a privileged position compared to other higher education institutions. The resolution calls for the establishment of a procedure to examine whether new Hungarian laws "seriously undermine EU values" and could lead to the suspension of Hungarian voting rights in EU institutions.
