Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that the approval of a 90 billion euro European Union (EU) loan to his country is "the right signal in the current circumstances."

Russia must end its war and will only be motivated to do so if there is sufficient support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia, Zelensky said on social media.

The Ukrainian president said his country was honoring its obligations in relations with the EU, even "on controversial issues such as the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline."

"We are counting on Europe to provide what is necessary for the effective protection of lives and progress in Ukraine's full European integration. It is important that the European support package is implemented quickly," Zelensky added.

Ambassadors of EU member states approved a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine earlier today, as well as the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, the Cypriot EU presidency announced.

The written procedure for the final adoption of these two measures, made possible by the lifting of the Hungarian veto, should be completed tomorrow, the statement added.

Budapest agreed to initiate these steps, but had previously conditioned this final approval on the resumption of Russian oil deliveries via the Druzhba oil pipeline, which crosses Ukraine and which Kiev reopened today.
