German police have arrested a Kazakh national on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service, including sending information to Russia about military support for Ukraine and the German defense industry, federal prosecutors said on Wednesday.
The suspect, identified only as Sergei K., in accordance with German privacy laws, is believed to have been in contact with Russian intelligence from Germany no later than May 2025, prosecutors said in a statement.
They suspect that Sergei K. was sending details about German military aid to Ukraine and its arms and defense industry, especially companies involved in the development of drones and robotic systems.
The suspect, who was detained in Berlin on Tuesday, is also suspected of passing on photos of public buildings in the German capital and military convoys on highways, including a convoy of a NATO member.
Prosecutors believe the suspect also sent information about possible sabotage targets in Germany and offered to recruit additional people.
