Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius' visit to Ukraine, his seventh since the start of the war, and thanked Berlin for its military support, estimated at more than 28,6 billion euros since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.
As Zelensky posted on social media, the two discussed strengthening cooperation in the production of defense equipment, with "six projects already underway and Ukraine's proposal for partnership in the field of drones."
Zelensky stressed the need for Europe to become "self-reliant" in the face of threats and to play a central role in diplomatic efforts to achieve peace and in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Pistorius said earlier today in Kiev that Russian President Vladimir Putin's statements about the imminent end of the war with Ukraine were disingenuous.
On May 9, the Russian president surprised many by suggesting that the war was "nearing an end," then saying that his friend, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, would be a good mediator for dialogue with Europe.

"If he (Putin) sees the end of this war approaching, why doesn't he just end it," Pistorius said at a news conference in Kiev.
The German minister assessed that Putin's statement about a possible end to the war is intended to divert attention from his own weaknesses, as Russia faces increasing losses of soldiers and scant progress in taking over parts of Ukrainian territory.
