Russian forces carried out attacks on the Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk on Sunday, killing at least six people, regional officials said, after a ceasefire brokered by the United States expired, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian officials said Russia fired more than 200 drones overnight, dashing hopes that a three-day ceasefire that ended on Monday would be extended, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said his country's forces had attacked gas facilities in the central Russian region of Orenburg, more than 1.500 kilometers from Ukraine's borders.
A drone strike on an apartment building in Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih killed two people and injured four, including the nine-month-old granddaughter of the deceased, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha and head of the military administration Oleksandr Vilkul said on Telegram.
The girl's leg had been severed, according to Reuters.
Zelensky, also writing on Telegram, condemned the attack as "cynical and devoid of any military logic."
"After the end of the partial three-day ceasefire, Russia continues to kill and maim Ukrainians, and the pressure on it must therefore not be weakened," he said.
Northeast of Krivi Rog, four people were killed and three were injured in an airstrike by bombs, Hanža said.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Army announced last night that 170 combat clashes had been recorded in the last 24 hours along the 1.250-kilometer front line.
The report states that the fiercest clashes were recorded near two key points of the Ukrainian defense in the east of the country - the cities of Kostiantynivka and Pokrovskoye. Russian forces, it was reported, carried out 25 and 24 combat operations, respectively.
Ukraine and Russia have agreed to a ceasefire to mark the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, as part of an effort led by US President Donald Trump to achieve peace after more than four years of war.
Trump said on Friday that he hopes the ceasefire will be extended.
Although neither side reported major airstrikes during the ceasefire, both sides said fighting continued along the front lines, accusing each other of drone and artillery attacks.
Ballistic missile defense
Zelensky, speaking in his evening video address, said Kiev was working with allies in Europe to develop ballistic missile defense technologies, adding that 13 countries and NATO representatives participated in talks on the issue on Tuesday.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said Kiev had proposed extending the ceasefire, but Moscow instead escalated by attacking civilian infrastructure with more than 200 drones.
Zelensky said that drones were intercepted in several regions, but that damage was reported to energy facilities, residential buildings, a kindergarten and a passenger train locomotive.
In Kiev, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, part of the wreckage of a downed drone fell onto the roof of a 16-story apartment building in the northern Obolon district, causing a fire.
Two people were injured in the central Cherkasy region, and damage was also reported in the Zhytomyr region, further west, as well as in the Chernihiv region, on the Russian border.
Two people were injured in attacks on the southeastern city of Dnipro and the southern city of Kherson. Russian drones also hit energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region, causing a power outage in the region, regional governor Vitaly Kim said.
Babushkin: Debris from Ukrainian drone caused fire at gas processing plant in Russia's Astrakhan region
Debris from a Ukrainian drone caused a fire at a gas processing plant in the southern Russian region of Astrakhan on Monday, the local governor said, Reuters reported.
"All enemy aircraft were either shot down or neutralized by electronic warfare systems. The debris caused a fire," Igor Babushkin wrote on Telegram.
Babushkin said there were no casualties or injuries and that the fire was expected to be extinguished within a few hours.
The facility is located near the Caspian Sea, about 1.675 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
