Fire in the Peloponnese: Charred body found

One person was killed and two were injured in a fire that engulfed a wooded area near Agi Teodori, not far from Athens, the fire service announced today.

A forest fire engulfed a forest area near the town of Agi Teodori, near Corinth, about 65 kilometers west of Athens, on the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, and local television footage showed smoke rising.

The fire broke out near the Panorama settlement, ANA reported.

Rescuers found a charred body burned beyond recognition and at least two houses were destroyed.

Several dozens of firefighters with 32 vehicles and six specialized aircraft are fighting the fire.

Forest fires are common during the summer months in Greece, but temperatures reached 34 degrees Celsius over the weekend, which is unusual for this time of year.
