A man armed with a rifle carried out a series of attacks in a city in southern Turkey on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding eight others, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Police, supported by helicopters and drones, were searching for the attacker who was still on the run after opening fire at multiple locations in Tarsus, in the Mersin province.

Turkey has been rocked by a series of recent shootings that have raised concerns about gun violence and school safety. Last month, an attack at a school in the southern province of Kahramanmaraş killed 10 people, while another school shooting in a nearby province wounded 16 people just a day earlier.

The state-run Anadolu Agency reported that the 37-year-old suspect in the latest attack, identified as Metin O., allegedly shot and killed his wife in the street before opening fire from a car at the restaurant, killing the owner and an employee.

He is suspected of then killing a teenager, a 50-year-old man and another person in another neighborhood in Tarsus, the agency reported.

Erdogan, speaking after a Cabinet meeting, expressed condolences for the victims, but did not provide information about the attacker or his motives.
