The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry today apologized to Estonia for the incident with a Ukrainian drone, which was likely diverted from its flight path by Russia using a jamming system, the Parisian newspaper Le Monde reported on its website.
"Our relevant institutions are working closely and will continue to do so to establish the exact circumstances of each incident and find ways to prevent them, including with the direct participation of our expert groups," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhy wrote on social media.
A Romanian F16 aircraft belonging to NATO's Baltic airspace control section shot down a Ukrainian drone in southern Estonia, authorities there said.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said the drone was shot down because of its trajectory.
"Most likely today we can say that it was a drone that, let's say, was intended to hit some Russian targets," he told the Associated Press (AP).
Today's drone overflight is the latest in a series of incidents in recent months in which Ukrainian aircraft headed toward Russia have flown over or landed on NATO territory.
Kiev is gradually stepping up drone attacks, focusing on Russian energy facilities and weapons factories.
