More than a million people gathered today in the main square in Madrid to attend a mass celebrated by the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV.
Citizens greeted the pope as he arrived at the square, accompanied by a procession with a flower carpet.
Today's mass fell on the Catholic holiday of Corpus Christi, in which processions of citizens pass through cities and towns, led by a priest carrying the Eucharist.
The Pope arrived in Spain yesterday, and will be on a week-long visit with the intention of highlighting the tradition of Catholic piety and encouraging young people to find faith.
The Pope's prayer last night was attended by around 600.000 young Spaniards, and Leo XIV told them not to be afraid to think about the priestly vocation and religious life.
The Pope called on Spaniards to end divisions and work towards unity.
He is scheduled to meet with members of his Augustinian religious order and address cultural leaders later today.
