Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared victory in parliamentary elections early this morning after results from just over a fifth of polling stations showed his party had about 54 percent of the vote.
The Armenian Election Commission will announce preliminary results later today.
At a press conference, Pashinyan said that his Civil Contract party had won, calling it a "historic victory," Reuters reports.
By the time Pashinyan made the announcement, the Armenian Election Commission had released early results with about 21 percent of polling stations.
Yesterday's elections are the first in Armenia since a major military defeat by Azerbaijan in 2023 and are seen as a test for Prime Minister Pashinyan's bid to deepen ties with the West and secure a peace agreement with Azerbaijan after years of conflict and political turmoil.
Early results show the Civil Contract party winning 54,5 percent of the vote, with the pro-Russian Strong Armenia alliance in second place with 21,9 percent. The Armenian Alliance is third with about 8,7 percent, and the Prosperous Armenia Party fourth with about five percent.
Turnout in the country of three million people was almost 59 percent.
The Armenian Parliament has 101 seats, and members of parliament are elected for a five-year term, with parties having to pass a four percent threshold to enter the Assembly, while coalitions with three or more parties have an eight percent threshold.
