Polish authorities have seized about a ton of heroin worth almost 220 million zlotys, or about $60 million, they said today, in one of the country's largest drug seizures in recent years.
Police said in a statement that officers found the drugs in containers shipped from the United Arab Emirates, which arrived in the Baltic port of Gdynia.
The police reportedly received information about the shipment from the British tax authorities.
"I don't have to tell you what would have happened if such a large amount of this terrible drug had reached the Polish market," Interior Minister Marcin Kjerwijnski said at a press conference.
The drugs were hidden in a shipment of decorative bricks and were discovered using X-ray equipment, police said.
Three Polish citizens were detained in connection with the case.
