British Defense Minister resigns: "The government is not prepared to allocate enough funds for the military..."

British Defense Secretary John Healy unexpectedly resigned today, saying the government was not prepared to allocate enough funds for the military at a time of growing global security threats.

Healy told Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the government's defense investment plan "falls significantly short of what is needed at this dangerous time."

The publication of the plan was delayed due to disagreements between the ministries of defense and finance.

"You were unable, and the Treasury Department was not prepared, to provide the resources the country needs to defend itself at a time of growing threats," Hilli said in his resignation letter.

"Therefore, I have no choice but to resign as Minister of Defense," he added.

Healy had held that position since July 2024, when the Labor Party came to power, and was considered a capable and thorough minister.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to increase the UK's defense spending to 2,5 percent of gross domestic product by 2027, and to three percent by 2034.

However, many in military circles warn that such a pace is too slow given the growing international security threats.

The resignation of the Minister of Defense is another heavy blow to the politically weakened Prime Minister, who has been asked by some senior officials in his Labor Party to step down from office for some time.
