Thousands of protesters gathered in Belfast today to condemn anti-immigrant rioters who burned houses and cars earlier this week after a 30-year-old Sudanese national was arrested over an alleged knife attack that took place in the north of the city.
The anti-racism rally followed a night of violent violence in parts of Northern Ireland following the arrest of a Sudanese man on charges of attempted murder in a knife attack that left a man partially blind.
The protests turned violent when groups of masked men set fire to several houses they believed were housing immigrants, set a bus on fire, and threw bricks, bottles, and Molotov cocktails at police.
Peaceful protesters today carried banners that read: "The problem is evil and violence, not race," "Your racism is not patriotism," and "Protect people, not prejudice."
