Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today thanked Europe for its support and continuation of his country's accession negotiations with the European Union (EU).
"The opening of the first cluster is an important political and moral boost for our country and our people. We thank Europe for all its support, which is truly appropriate and helps us protect lives," the Ukrainian president wrote on Telegram.
European Union (EU) member states agreed on Friday to open membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova next week.
Ambassadors from the 27 EU member states decided at a meeting in Brussels to officially open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on Monday in Luxembourg.
Ukraine faces a long road to eventual EU membership. If it manages to successfully conclude negotiations, which are expected to take several years, its accession would require unanimous agreement by the 27 member states, followed by ratification by each member state, either through a parliamentary vote or a referendum.
