Italian police have arrested seven people suspected of belonging to a militant anarchist network and of carrying out sabotage on a high-speed train line during the Winter Olympics in February, Reuters reports.
In a statement released on Tuesday, police said a judge had ordered the detention of five suspects, while two people were placed under house arrest. The charges include terrorist association and undermining the democratic order.
Police said the two arrested are charged with taking part in the February 14 attack on the high-speed train line between Rome and Florence.
According to investigators, the sabotage was carried out with improvised explosive devices, causing extensive damage to the infrastructure estimated at 455.000 euros.
The attack caused train delays of more than an hour during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, which ran from February 6 to 22.
"The sabotage, along with another attack carried out at the same time on the Rome-Naples line, was taken on the website ispirazione.noblogs.org, which had been opened specifically for this purpose a few months earlier," the police said.
The police added that the anarchist group's statement explicitly mentions the date of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, as well as anti-militaristic goals and violent attacks on infrastructure.
According to police, the group operated from Rome, but maintained ties with other cells in Bologna, Milan and Naples.
The Rome prosecutor's office has also issued multiple search warrants against other suspects who are under investigation in several Italian cities.
In a 40-page document published on a website cited by police, the group also claimed responsibility for the sabotage of the Transalpine Oil Pipeline in March.
