Both pilots of an old fighter plane, a two-seater of the Hellenic Air Force, a twin-engine jet "Phantom F4", which crashed today during an air show at an air base near Athens, have died, Greek RTV SKAI announced.

Air Force officials say the crash occurred shortly after takeoff, as the pilots attempted to recover from a sharp turn at low altitude.

The fire in an abandoned factory and in the grove next to the base fence where the plane parts fell was extinguished by 95 firefighters with three groups of mountaineers, two groups of rescuers and 29 vehicles. Nine planes and four helicopters were used to extinguish the fire from the air.

Two foreigners who were working on dismantling equipment were slightly injured in that former factory.

The accident occurred during Athens Flying Week, an annual air show at Tanagra Air Base.
