One woman died, but more than 1.000 migrants were rescued from boats between Saturday and Sunday, not far from the coast of Libya, officials announced today.
The organizations "Doctors Without Borders" and "SOS Mediterranean" announced that the woman was found on one of the boats transporting the migrants, and that the rescue operation lasted more than six hours, reports AFP.
The migrants were picked up by two rescue ships, and they were reportedly trying to reach the Italian coast.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 22.000 have been rescued and at least 440 migrants have died, but it is assumed that the number is much higher.
