The police in the German city of Dusseldorf, where nine people were injured last night in an ax attack at the train station, arrested a 36-year-old man from Kosovo, who, according to the police, is mentally ill.
Reuters reports that the suspect, who lives in the nearby city of Wuppertal in Germany, fled after the attack from the Dizeldor train station and jumped off a bridge, seriously injuring himself. He was subsequently arrested, and police believe he acted alone.
"The man who was arrested and who was injured is a 36-year-old man originally from the former Yugoslavia who seems to suffer from mental problems," the police said earlier in a statement.
The police were informed about the attack last night shortly after 21:XNUMX, when the attacker got out of the suburban train armed with an ax and started attacking passengers at the station.
The police then announced that seven people were injured, three of them seriously.
The police first announced that five people were injured, but later announced that the number of injured had increased to seven, three of whom were seriously injured. Among the injured is a 13-year-old girl, who was hit by an ax in the upper part of her arm.
The ax was found and police are searching the area around the train station, which was closed for the investigation. Railway traffic started working again around one hour after midnight.
Police retracted an earlier report that another person had been arrested, later stating that they were now working on the assumption that the man had acted alone.
The confusion was caused by a video from a security camera, which showed another person running away from the scene of the crime. After a preliminary investigation, the police confirmed that it is likely that the ax wounding was the work of one man.
German authorities have increased security in the country after a series of attacks in public places over the past year, particularly after a truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin in December that killed 12 people. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for that attack.

A police spokesman said earlier that the suspect in the attack was also injured and is in hospital.
The motives for the attack are unknown at this time.
"We will not use the words 'rampage' or 'terrorism,'" a police spokesman said, Reuters reported, adding that there were no serious threats of new attacks.
