At least 150 Italians decided to undergo euthanasia in Switzerland in 2016, the organizations seeking the legalization of this practice in Italy announced today.
The association Exit Italy stated that in 2004 there were about 30 calls per week for questions about the use of euthanasia in Italy, and today there are "three times more".
The debate on euthanasia was rekindled after the recent death in Switzerland of Fabian Antoniani (40), who was left blind and completely paralyzed after a traffic accident in 2014.
Antoniani, who said he had the right to the dignified death he wanted because he felt like he was in a cage, was flown to Switzerland for euthanasia.
Euthanasia is prohibited in Italy. It is officially legalized in Europe only in three countries - the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, but some countries allow some form of euthanasia, as in Switzerland, where "assisted suicide" is in force.
In Belgium and the Netherlands, various mechanical methods or chemical substances are used for euthanasia in order to cause death as quickly as possible.
