The High President of the European Union (EU) for foreign policy and security, Federica Mogherini, said today that all migrants deserve respect regardless of religion, two days after US President Donald Trump signed the decree on immigration.
"Everyone deserves respect, regardless of religion, gender or nationality," said Mogherini's text in English and Italian on migrants, which did not mention Trump directly.
According to her, it is very "strange that it has to be remembered two days after the Holocaust Remembrance Day".
On Friday, Trump banned Syrian refugees from entering the country until further notice, and a three-month ban on issuing American visas was introduced for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
"In Europe, we have learned through our great and tragic history that all people are primarily human beings with inalienable rights," Mogherini said, adding that Europe will continue to "support, receive and care for those fleeing war."
No EU institution has commented directly on Trump's decree, while an unnamed spokesperson for the European Commission said on Saturday that it had no comment on the US measure.
