British Prime Minister Theresa May arrived today at the headquarters of the European Union (EU) in Brussels in an effort to renegotiate parts of the Brexit agreement with the EU.
May was welcomed in Brussels by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and will also meet with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani.
The prime minister is trying to get changes to the part of the agreement that refers to the so-called safety net (backstop), which avoids a hard border between Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland.
British MPs rejected the agreement reached between London and Brussels, demanding changes to that part of the agreement, but the EU announced that there could be no new negotiations because the best possible agreement had been reached.
There are fears that Britain, which officially leaves the EU on March 29, could leave the union without a final deal.
