Egypt's appeals court confirmed today the 20-year prison sentence of the deposed president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, which is the first final verdict in a series of trials against him.
The Court of Cassation also confirmed the sentences for eight of his associates, seven of whom received the same prison sentence, and one was sentenced to ten years in prison, a court official said, as reported by the AFP agency.
In April 2015, Morsi was found guilty of his role in the bloody clashes outside the presidential palace.
His supporters then clashed with protesters after Morsi issued a decree putting his decisions above the judiciary, sparking public anger that culminated in mass protests against him in June and July 2013.
The Egyptian army removed Morsi from power on July 3 of that year, and he has since been brought to a series of trials.
