Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said it would be "right" for Americans suspected of terrorism to be tried at Guantanamo Bay.
In an interview with the Miami Herald, when asked if he would approve new incarcerations in that prison if elected president, Trump answered that he wanted to ensure that the US had a "safe place" to hold "radical Islamic terrorists."
The Republican candidate said that US President Barack Obama is releasing "terrible people" from prison who should not be released.
Obama sent dozens of prisoners from Guantanamo to other countries in an effort to close the facility in Cuba.
Under US federal law, US citizens cannot be tried in military courts.
Trump also criticized Obama and others who want terrorism suspects to be tried in traditional courts.
Asked about American citizens, Trump said "it would be fine" if they could face trial at military commissions at Guantanamo.
