Drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán has been transferred to a prison near the US border, a Mexican security official and a lawyer for one of Mexico's most dangerous criminals said today.
A security official said the Sinaloa cartel boss had been transferred from the maximum-security Altiplano prison near Mexico City to a prison in Ciudad Juarez, which is on the Mexico-US border, across from El Paso.
The reason for Guzmán's transfer to the prison in Juarez was not officially stated.
At the beginning of March, El Chapo Guzmán asked to speed up the procedure for his extradition to the US due to alleged poor treatment in prison.
Lawyer Jose Refuhio Rodríguez said today that the defense team was not informed in advance about the transfer of Guzman, but that one of the lawyers went to the border town to see him.
Guzman was arrested in early January, six months after he escaped from a maximum security prison.
