A US drone strike in Somalia killed the key leader of the extremist group Al-Shabaab, Hasan Ali Dor, who was involved in two attacks in Mogadishu more than a year ago, the Pentagon said.
More than 30 people, including at least three Americans, were killed in those attacks in Mogadishu.
Several US officials said Dor and two others were killed, reports AP.
Hasan Ali Dor was the target of an airstrike carried out on Thursday, and the US military is still assessing the results of that strike, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said yesterday.
Other unnamed US officials said the attack was carried out about 30 kilometers south of Jilib in southern Somalia, not far from the border with Kenya, and that Dor and two others were killed in the attack.
Cook alleged that Dor helped carry out the deadly Christmas Day 2014 attack at the Mogadishu airport, as well as the March 2015 attack at the Maka al-Mukaramah hotel, in which American citizens were also killed.
He added that Dor, who was also a member of Al-Qaeda, worked for the security and intelligence wing of Al-Shabaab.
A senior US official said Dora was believed to be involved in planning multiple attacks targeting US citizens.
