Parliamentary elections and elections for the Assembly of Experts are being held in Iran today, and the supreme leader of that country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called on voters to turn out in large numbers in order to thwart Tehran's enemies.

"A large turnout will disappoint Iran's enemies," Khamenei said and appealed to citizens to choose their representatives wisely, reports Reuters.

Almost 55 million Iranians have the right to vote, and today's vote is largely a referendum on the actions of President Hassan Rouhani after the nuclear agreement was reached last year, which lifted international sanctions on Iran in exchange for limiting the country's nuclear activities, AP estimates.

Today, Iranians will also vote on the election of members of the Assembly of Experts, a body whose main task is to elect the Supreme Leader, reports AP.

About 53.000 polling stations have been opened across Iran, where citizens will vote on the election of 290 deputies and 88 members of the Assembly of Experts.
