An international team of forensic experts will analyze the remains of the Chilean Nobel laureate and poet Pablo Neruda in order to determine the exact cause of his death, it was announced today.
The famous poet died after the 1973 coup led by General Augusto Pinochet. It was speculated that Neruda was poisoned by agents of the right-wing dictatorship, the AP agency reports.
His remains were exhumed in 2013, but toxicological analyzes showed no traces of toxic agents in the bones.
Despite this, the Government of Chile announced in 2015 that "it is possible and very likely that a third party is responsible for Neruda's death".
The statement emphasized that the conclusion has not yet been reached, as the results of the experts are awaited.
The remains of his bones and teeth will be analyzed at the DNA Center of the Canadian University "Mc Master" and at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen.
A panel of experts will focus on finding the pathogenic bacteria that could have led to the death of the famous poet, which will help solve a mystery that is more than 40 years old.
Neruda, one of the world's greatest love poets who was also known for his staunch communist views, is believed to have died of prostate cancer just days after the September 11, 1973, military coup that ousted Chile's socialist president. Salvador Allende and the established dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
Around 17 people are believed to have been killed during the 3.000 years of the dictatorship.
