Mexican authorities want to question American actor Sean Penn and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo over their interview with drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, an unnamed federal official said today.
"That's true, of course, responsibilities need to be established," he told AFP on condition of anonymity.
He did not elaborate on the prosecution's intention to talk to the actors about their mysterious meeting with then-fugitive El Chapo.
Another federal official said it was unclear whether Penn and Del Castillo committed a crime.
"Even though a journalist can interview a suspected drug dealer, they are not journalists," he said.
Mexican authorities were able to discover the location where the fugitive drug lord is hiding and capture him thanks to a secret interview he had with Sean Penn a few months ago.
Pen's interview with Guzmán, who has so far escaped twice from maximum security prisons in Mexico, was published late last night on the website of the American magazine "Rolling Stone", the AP agency reported.
The interview reportedly took place at an undisclosed location in Mexico in late 2015, a few months before "El Chapo" was to be recaptured last Friday in the city of Los Mochis, Sinaloa state, after being on the run for six months.
Mexican authorities knew about a meeting between Pena, Guzmán and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo in October and tracked the American actor's movements, which helped them discover the ranch where the drug lord was hiding, two Mexican government sources said.
