US Defense Secretary Ash Carter said today that a US strike in Iraq that may have killed Iraqi soldiers appears to be "a mistake involving both sides".
The US military announced that Iraqi soldiers may have been killed in an air strike against the Islamic State on Friday, near the city of Fallujah, without specifying their number. According to unnamed officials, the Iraqis said 10 soldiers may have been killed.
The army statement said that the attacks were carried out at the request of the Iraqi security forces on the ground and based on their information. The city of Fallujah is under the control of the Islamic State.
Carter, during a visit to the US warship "Kearsarge" in the Persian Gulf, said that he called Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to express his condolences.
Today, the head of the Pentagon visited the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle", which from the Gulf controls the naval operations of the international coalition, led by the USA, against the jihadists of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
It is the first visit by an American defense minister to that aircraft carrier, which took place as part of his tour of the Middle East during which he will talk with coalition partners about greater military cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State.
