The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Republican Paul Ryan, criticized the presidential candidate Donald Trump today, stating that his request to ban Muslims from entering the country is not in line with the values of the Republican Party and the USA.
Such attitudes are not "what this party stands for and, more importantly, what this country stands for," Ryan told reporters after a meeting of the Republican caucus.
"Freedom of religion is a fundamental constitutional principle ... Conservatism is not what was proposed yesterday," Ryan said, adding that he doesn't usually comment on the presidential race but would make an exception this time.
Trump, who according to the polls is still leading in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, yesterday asked for a "total and complete ban on the entry of Muslims into the USA".
Republican Rep. Matt Salmon told reporters that Ryan told the meeting that Trump's words violated at least two amendments to the US Constitution.
Trump rejected criticism today, stating that his proposal is "no different" from the measures of President Franklin Roosevelt, who, he said, "is very much appreciated" even though he ordered the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
