Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said today that the US is using "money and sex" to try to infiltrate Iran and warned Iranians not to fall into the "enemy's trap".
In an address to the commanders of the Revolutionary Guards, Iran's elite armed forces, Khamenei said the authorities should take a serious look at "infiltration".
The ayatollah's statement seems to support the recent wave of arrests of pro-Western writers and journalists, which members of the hard-line judiciary and security services said was necessary to prevent infiltration attempts from the West, according to the AP agency.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is considered a moderate politician, criticized the arrests.
Khamenei, who has the final say in all state affairs, has long claimed that the US is trying to abolish the Islamic Republic.
