The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has always stated that he is ready to contribute to the dialogue and the achievement of peace on the Korean Peninsula, it was stated today by the Office of the UN Spokesperson regarding some announcements that the first person of the UN could visit Pyongyang.
The spokesman's office has no comment on the report of the South Korean news agency Jonap, which, citing unnamed UN sources, previously reported that Ban Ki-moon would visit North Korea this week, Reuters reported.
Jonap reported that it will be Ban's first visit to North Korea as UN Secretary General, Jonap adds.
The South Korean agency also stated that the planned visit raises hopes that Ban could initiate progress in relations between the two Koreas, as well as efforts to resolve Pyongyang's disputed nuclear program.
Ban was the foreign minister of South Korea from January 2004 to November 2006. He assumed the position of Secretary General of the UN on the first day of 2007.
