An Italian-born nun who stood up to legendary Wild West outlaw Billy the Kid and helped found schools and build hospitals in New Mexico may be canonized.
The Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Santa Fe will determine why Sister Blandina Segale should become a saint, and the commission will forward the conclusion to the Vatican.
Blandina Segale was also a protector of Hispanic and American Indian residents.
The encounter of a nun with an outlaw from the Wild West was presented in the episode "The Fastest Nun in the West" (Death Valley Days) of the series.
She has worked as a teacher and social worker in Ohio, Colorado and New Mexico.
Billy the Kid was born in 1859, and legend has it that he killed more than 20 people, although it is now believed that there were eight. He was killed, according to the most accepted version, by Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881.
