The rapporteur of the social democratic group of the European Parliament (EP), Tanja Fajon, today accused Croatia of pushing migrants into the cold river, and the rapporteur of Croatia, Tonino Picula, said that these accusations were misplaced.
"I was in reception centers on the Slovenian border. There are thousands of tired and sick refugees in the column. Check out the footage. Who are they who drive them into the cold river in the middle of the night? Isn't Croatia obliged to respect the rules of the European Union", said Fajon in the debate on the migrant crisis in the EP.
Picula, however, replied that it was a desperate move by people who were not allowed to cross the border over the bridge and enter Slovenia.
He added that more than 250 people entered Croatia in the last month and that all of them were provided with medical assistance, food and organized transportation, reports Tanjug.
"And all this without the use of force, the burning of camps and the militarization of the borders," said Picula, alluding to the fact that Slovenia sent the army to the borders.
Picula, when it comes to the mini-summit held on Sunday in Brussels and dedicated to the Balkan refugee crisis, said that "the implementation of the conclusions from that meeting will reduce the suffering of refugees and help the countries on their route, among which is Croatia."
