How many people died on the Hajj in Mina: India and Pakistan handed over photos of 1.100 victims

Authorities in India and Pakistan said today that Saudi Arabian officials have given diplomats about 1.100 photographs of those killed last week in a stampede during the Hajj pilgrimage in the Saudi city of Mina.

This would be significantly more than the official death toll - 769, which was previously announced by the Saudi authorities, the American agency AP reported.

Pakistani government spokesman Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, whose ruling PML-N party is in charge of the disaster response, told a news conference that Saudi officials had given diplomats 1.100 photographs of the dead.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted on Sunday that Saudi officials had released photos of the 1.090 pilgrims who died in Mina.

The AP agency reported that Saudi Arabian officials were not available for comment on the number of victims in Mina.

The tragedy occurred on September 24, when two large groups of pilgrims collided at the intersection in Mina, on the way to Jamarat, where pilgrims symbolically stone the devil.
