It is well known that smuggling things into prison is almost as old as the prison itself. From "files in cakes", using baskets for dirty laundry, to garbage trucks.
The Maryland case apparently went a step further. Namely, two men tried to use a drone to transfer a gun, marijuana and a DVD of pornographic content to the Western Maryland County Jail.
However, the Maryland authorities managed to thwart this action, because this couple was under surveillance for a long time.
The police confiscated both the drone and the "package", which alone was enough to bring charges.
Mark Vernarelli told CNN that an investigation is now being conducted into the connection between the two arrested and the inmates.
One of the arrested is being held without bail, while the judge posted a bail of $250.000 for the other arrested.
This is not the first time a drone has been used for smuggling purposes. Guards in the courtyard of the Mansfield prison (state of Ohio) found a drone that was transporting tobacco, heroin and marijuana.
