Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Esid said that the army and private entrepreneurs are building a fence towards Libya to prevent the infiltration of extremists, following recent terrorist attacks claimed by the Islamic State.
Esid said construction work, aimed at making the border impenetrable to jihadists and their vehicles, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Esid told television that the barrier will stretch 168 kilometers from the coast to the interior of the country along the border with Libya and will consist of fences, sandbanks, trenches and observation posts.
The Tunisian government declared a state of emergency after an extremist killed 38 tourists in the Mediterranean tourist resort of Sousse.
Three months earlier, terrorists opened fire on tourists at the National Bardo Museum in the capital, Tunis, killing 22 people.
Tunisia's border with Libya is 459 kilometers long.
