An Australian woman who fell on her head as a baby in hospital and suffered serious head injuries has been awarded a record $11,7 million in damages.
The 19-year-old, whose name has not been released, was just four weeks old when she suffered her injuries at Port Hedland Hospital in Western Australia in April 1996.
According to local media, the baby fell out of a three-year-old boy who, without supervision, entered the isolated ward of the hospital and came to her bed.
According to her mother, on that occasion she suffered bruises on her head, a fractured skull above her left ear and had an effusion on the brain.
The girl spent two weeks in intensive care at a Perth hospital, but her motor reflexes have not returned to normal, her mother says.
This is the highest compensation in the health sector in Australia. Five years ago, the authorities had to pay an alleged $10 million to six-year-old Saba Baton, due to severe complications caused by the flu vaccine.
