The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, was re-elected as head of state after receiving the support of 97,7 percent of voters, the Election Commission announced today.
The turnout in yesterday's presidential elections was 95,22 percent.
"The large turnout is proof of the unity of the people of Kazakhstan, the desire for a stable life and support for the political program that I am offering," Nazarbayev said last night before the announcement of the first results.
The opposition did not nominate its representative. Nazarbayev had two opponents in the elections, but they are also considered his supporters.
Nazarbayev came to power in 1991 and was then the only candidate in the elections. He was then re-elected in 1999, 2005 and 2011, each time with a result that exceeded 80 percent of the vote.
However, international observers assessed that those elections were not free.
The elections were held at a time of economic crisis and rising tensions in neighboring countries, Ukraine and Afghanistan.
