Two police officers in India have been arrested for killing a teenager during protests in the troubled region of Kashmir, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that one police officer ordered another to open fire on protesters who were pelting them with stones during a protest in Narbal village on Saturday, "in violation of established standard operating procedure."
The family of the murdered young man, who is about 15 years old, claims, however, that the authorities took him into custody and killed him on the street.
Indian authorities are facing growing resentment from separatists after their leader Masarat Alam was arrested on Friday on charges of leading anti-India protests in the region.
Alam was arrested again just weeks after he was released from prison after five years on the same charges.
Otherwise, hundreds of people in the Pakistani part of Kashmir burned the Indian flag and a dummy with the image of the prime minister of that country in protest of police brutality in the Indian part of the divided area.
Refugees from the Indian part of Kashmir gathered under the slogan "Defenders of Freedom" in Muzaffarabad, the capital of the Pakistani region, AFP reported.
The protest was also attended by children carrying placards reading "Go India, Quit (Kashmir)" and "Free Kashmiri leaders".
Indian officials are struggling to contain public anger after the arrest of a separatist leader on Friday, accused of leading protests against Indian rule.
Masarat Alam Bat was arrested two days after he shouted pro-Pakistan slogans at a peaceful separatist rally.
The streets of Srinagar were tense today, with armed police and paramilitary forces searching vehicles and questioning people.
Muslim-majority Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since both countries gained independence in 1947.
Since the great insurgency of 1989, several rebel groups have demanded that the region gain independence or join Pakistan.
