U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order this evening that provides punitive measures for foreign interference in the U.S. elections, National Security Adviser John Bolton said.
As the parliamentary elections in November approach, "we have seen some signs, not only from Russia, but also from China, and maybe from Iran and even North Korea," said the head of the US intelligence service, Dan Coats.
Bolton said the order is about stopping a campaign of disinformation and attempts to manipulate the election.
Coates added that the goal of the regulation is to prevent any interference in the election.
Trump has been the target of criticism that he did not "take seriously" threats to the US electoral system after alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, which Russia has repeatedly denied.
