Taiwan: Asia's largest pride parade in history

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Taiwan's capital Taipei today for the annual gay pride parade ahead of next month's referendum on whether same-sex marriage will be recognized on the island.

In the first such decision in Asia, Taiwan's Constitutional Court ruled in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in May 2017, after years of campaigning by gay rights activists.

However, no great progress has been made towards the implementation of the court's decision. Meanwhile, gay rights and anti-gay rights activists have organized a referendum on the issue to be held on November 24 at the same time as local elections.

Organizers estimate that around 130.000 people participated in today's gay parade in Taipei, which is the largest gathering for such an annual event in Asia.
