In coordinated police actions carried out in 116 countries, 500 tons of illegal pharmaceutical products available on the Internet were seized, reports Tanjug.
As part of that seizure, there were also fake anti-cancer and anti-pain medicines, Interpol announced today.
As stated in the statement, the operation called "Pangea XI" led to 859 arrests worldwide and the seizure of pharmaceutical products worth about 14 million dollars that are potentially dangerous, reports Reuters.
"We focused on delivery services organized by criminal networks and as part of that operation 3.671 links were taken down, including websites, social media pages and online marketplaces," Interpol said.
Illegal trade in medicines on the Internet, especially on the "dark web", has been growing significantly in recent years, despite the fact that the authorities shut down the sites where they are sold.
The agency explains that the reason for this is because criminal groups are increasingly different from each other and because they attract new clients.
This is the second drug seizure operation conducted by Interpol this month.
