Mexico: Arrested one of the biggest cocaine smugglers

Mexican marines and police today arrested Cesar Gastelum Serrano, who is said to be a leading cocaine smuggler in the service of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel.

According to Mexico's Security Commissioner Alejandro Rubido, Serrano had a gun and a package of cocaine when he was arrested in the resort of Cancun.

In December last year, the US Department of the Treasury put Serrano on the list of drug lords and called him "one of the most active suppliers of cocaine in the service of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel."

The ministry said he ran an "extensive criminal network" capable of smuggling "tons of cocaine weekly through Honduras and Guatemala to Mexico."

Alejandro Rubido said that Serrano once commanded the mafia in Honduras and ordered the killing of police officers.
