Kenyan students demand greater security: "We are not safe"

Hundreds of Kenyan students marched through downtown Nairobi today paying tribute to 148 colleagues who were killed in an attack by Islamist militants on a university in Garissa and calling on the government to improve security measures in the country. Some of the demonstrators wore black as a sign of mourning, and the banners they carried read "comrades are tired of al-Shabaab" and "you remain in our hearts". Cries of "we are not safe" were also heard, AP reports.

The procession stopped in front of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta's office to present their demands, which include compensation for the families of victims of the attacks, construction of memorials to those killed and improved security at Kenyan universities and across the country. Kenyatta's government has been criticized for the alleged late response of the security forces to the attack in Garissa.

In front of the headquarters of the Kenyan police, demonstrators also stopped, shouting: "Where have you been" and "We want guns". A Kenyan court today gave the police another 30 days to investigate the cases of five suspects who supplied weapons to the four attackers at the University of Garissa.
