Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said today that people living in the territories from which the extremists of the Islamic State were expelled will be protected.
Al-Abadi said in the city of Irbil that he promised that the "property and rights" of those living in those territories would be respected.
The Iraqi prime minister said dozens of houses and shops had been burned in Tikrit, which was liberated by Iraqi forces with the help of Shia militia and volunteer units.
The Shiite paramilitary force Popular Mobilization Forces, which played a key role in driving the jihadists out of Tikrat, has been accused of looting and destroying Sunni towns captured in the fighting.
