The United Nations has announced that Islamic State (IS) militants most likely committed genocide against Iraq's Yazidi community, as well as crimes against humanity and crimes against civilians, and called on the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague to prosecute these cases.
In the report of the UN Office for Human Rights, it calls on the Security Council of the United Nations to authorize the International Criminal Court to prosecute crimes.
The Islamic State militant group has seized large parts of northern Iraq since June last year, killing thousands of men, especially Yazidis, while raping women, selling them as slaves, and forcing children to convert to Islam.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq fled their homes before the onslaught of IS.
The UN report is based on interviews with more than 100 victims of crimes committed by IS members, witnesses of crimes against minority communities, including Shiite Muslims, reports Radio Free Europe.
The report added that government forces in Iraq and their militias are suspected to have "also committed war crimes" while fighting IS.
