An Egyptian court today sentenced the supreme leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Muhammad Badi, to life imprisonment, and upheld the previously pronounced death sentence for four co-accused in the trial for the killing of protesters.
Before the sentencing, the defendants in the courtroom shouted "Down with military rule!" and announced an appeal against the verdict.
Badi, who has already been sentenced to death on another indictment, is accused of killing 12 anti-Islamist protesters who tried to enter the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood before the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
After Morsi was ousted in July 2013, more than 1.400 people died in police crackdowns on Islamist protesters, while at least 15.000 Morsi supporters were imprisoned.
