At least 25 people died today in Iraq in an attack by the Islamic State on the city of Kirkuk and its surroundings, in the north of the country, local officials announced.
Eldin Karim said that the Kurds managed to suppress the Islamic State, with the help of the international coalition, led by the USA.
Among the dead are General Shirko Rauf and five other Kurdish fighters, as well as dozens of members of the Islamic State.
The Islamic State's assault began at dawn, and the first targets of the attack were the oil and gas infrastructure, Karim said.
The Islamic State also attacked the city of Samara, where seven people were killed and 31 wounded in three car bomb explosions and a clash between terrorists and security forces.
Five people were killed in an explosion at a flea market in Baghdad.
Since last year, the Islamic State has occupied several areas in the territory of Iraq and Syria, and as they approached the autonomous region of Kurdistan, the Kurds joined the Iraqi forces in the fight against the terrorist organization.
